To start a race, select PLAY GAME from the main menu. Next, choose whether to race in single player mode (i.e., against the computer AI), or MULTIPLAYER (against a live opponent over the network), or EVENT or CHAMPIONSHIP mode. Once the selection is made, you will be taken to the racing screen. Control and button designation is listed in the COMMAND LIST below.
When the racing screen is first displayed, the game is waiting for you to start burnout and staging.
Press and hold the UP arrow or number 2 key to start your burnout. The length of time this key is depressed will have an effect on how warmed up the tires are and how well it will perform (traction resulting from warmed-up tires). The optimal time to hold this key down is somewhere between 1 and 2 seconds. Once you release the key, the car will stage (line up at the start line) automatically. When the green light on the Christmas tree lights up, you press the UP arrow key to accelerate. You only need to press this key once. Press the SHIFT key (designated for your handset in the COMMAND LIST below) to shift gears, from 1st through 3rd. When you cross the finish line, hit the CHUTE key to deploy your chute. During the race, if the car drifts, you must steer with the designated LEFT and RIGHT keys (designated for your handset in the COMMAND LIST below). If you veer into the right lane, you are disqualified. If you veer into the wall on the left, you will crash. Note that light taps are usually sufficient to correct windsteer and put you back on course.
The OPTIONS menu allows you to select several game options, including Player Names. PLAYER NAME designates your player name in the multi-player game. DIFFICULTY allows you to select the skill level of the computer AI racer. RACE CLASS allows you to move up the race class hierarchy once you have accumulated enough bank points.
